Its May the 18th and back in 1937 3 NZ nurses were detained on their way to the Spanish Civil War René Shadbolt, Isobel Dodds and Millicent Sharples. were recruited by the New Zealand Spanish Medical Aid Committee (SMAC),On the day they were to leave Auckland they were summoned to the Central Police Station where they were interrogated for three hours . . The nurses were eventually released in time to board their ship, the Awatea, but SMAC was outraged. They wrote to the government demanding an explanation and an inquiry into the matter. Neither was forthcoming, although Police Minister Peter Fraser – a family friend of Dodds – eventually admitted that the government had over-reacted.
