If the earthquake had happened on the North Shore around 55,000 properties would have received damage

If the 7.1 magnitude earthquake had happened on the Shore around 55,000 properties would have been damaged.

The North Shore is a little over half the size of the Christchurch and Selwyn district. In that area they have a total of around 150,000 properties. The Earthquake Commission is expecting claims from  around 100,000 of them. On the North Shore we have 72,500 residential buildings and therefore this would equate to around 55,000 being damaged.

However the construction style is different and its therefore debatable if the same amount of damage would have happened.

However it puts things in perspective in regard to the destructive nature of the earthquake. You would probably find it hard to put this level of damage in perspective.
