At The FleaFM we feel we have had an extended Earth Hour with our lights going out at 10am on Friday and staying out for over 24 hours.
However the wider globe celebrated Earth Hour last night with many landmark buildings turning their lights off at 8.30pm last night.
People in more than 120 countries were dimming the lights on Saturday in the fourth annual Earth Hour.
A gesture organizers hope will re-energize efforts to strike a binding pact on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Among the first landmarks to switch off the lights for an hour were parliamentary buildings in Wellington and the Auckland Sky City tower.
The renowned white-shelled roof of the Sydney Opera House followed – one of the thousands of buildings and countless homes that took part across Australia.
The event rolled out across the world as places that have signed up to join the climate action each turned off their lights at 8:30 pm local time (0930 GMT) .
Andy Ridley, a WWF worker in Sydney came up with the idea of Earth Hour in a pub with friends.
Speaking on Saturday he said he hoped this year’s event would inspire world leaders to strive for a much stronger climate agreement than that struck at December’s Copenhagen climate change summit.
Earth Hour organisers said there was no easy way to measure how much energy had been saved worldwide.
They added that the fact so many countries had signed up to take part was in itself a key message to world leaders that global warming was an issue of great concern to people worldwide.
