A period of rotten weather is ahead of Shaun and it looks like he will take a couple of steps backwards.
The last week has seen a period of gains and on last report he was less than 500 km’s from the coast of New Zealand. However the ex tropical cyclone brushing down our coast is going to have a significant impact on his progress and Shaun is expecting to have a few days in his cabin and unable to get out due to the rough conditions.
During the last week he has failed in attempts to get his water system back in operation. This resulted in emergency supplies being dropped to him from a plane.
Here’s his latest posts on the web site and on twitter.
Today was better than expected for Shaun since he did not lose any ground west, but rather made a few miles as the wind pushed him further north. It looks like he’s being drawn home to Auckland!
This last part of the journey, inside 400km, is the most important! Its crucial that Shaun keeps to his routines and makes good decisions and he tends to remind us of this rather than the other way around which shows that he is still mentally sound! Its still amazing just how positive he is! Even as some adverse weather is currently rolling in and he may lose up to 100km, Shaun still manages to crack a joke and usually sees the glass half full!
As the titles eludes to, Shaun spent a good portion of this afternoon being entertained by a small pod of whales and some dolphins. Its going to be amazing to see all the footage he’s captured over the course of the trip!
and on twitter…
wind starting to get stronger from the east, may get pushed back a bit this weekend. Saw a MASSIVE shark before…huge fin!
quite gnarly out here, gusty easterlies. bit apprehensive to row because its risky without any spare oars!
