Earthquake: Sizeable jolt hits New Zealand’s South Island

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook the lower South Island at 6.14pm on Sunday night.

The quake struck 70km southwest of Te Anau at a depth of 90km, it was felt in Fiordland, Southland and Otago, but no damage was expected, GNS science said.

It follows a day of Tsunami watching and warnings after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of Chile.
