Work on the second and final stage of improving Onewa Road between Lake Road and Sylvan Avenue started in February this year.
The project is part of our ongoing commitment to improve transport options and reduce traffic congestion around the city.
The project includes:
- Creating a new transit lane as a continuation of the existing one along Onewa Road to the west of Lake Road
- A shared cycle path and footpath (Share with Care path) along the northern side of Onewa Road from Queen Street down towards the Onepoto Shared Use Bridge
- A central flush median to make it safer and easier for residents entering and exiting their properties
- New street lighting, road markings and signage
- Improved traffic signals at main intersections
- The undergrounding of overhead power and phone lines to improve the aesthetics of this important gateway to our city
It is the final stage of improvements along this section of Onewa Road and complements the changes that were made to the Onewa Road motorway interchange and bridges as part of Stage 1, completed in September 2008.
How will residents and road users be affected?

The work which will be undertaken by Transfield Services Ltd will be phased to minimise disruption to residents and road users.
While the work is taking place, there may be restricted access to some properties. We will therefore be providing alternative monitored car parking in nearby Belle Vue Avenue with a free 24 hour shuttle service to and from vehicles for those residents affected. Using this service will assist residents at times when access to their property is restricted, save people time when leaving and returning to their property and help us to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The work will be carried out on the road reserve and footpath and will not affect private properties. However, we may need to resurface small sections of some driveways and will contact people directly where this is the case.
The road will be reduced to one lane in each direction so people may experience some delays during peak traffic.
How long will the work take?
The work is expected to take about nine months and is due for completion in Spring 2010. We are taking a staged approach and where possible will look at ways to progress the work quicker.

Is it just me or does the stopping of the new T3 lane in as indicated above create an even bigger bottle neck at the bottom of Onewa? Surely the new lane should go all the way to the motorway. The busses already share the whole of Onewa T3 lane very well. Why not the last few hundred metres then there would be no need for the T3 traffic to merge with the other trafic in the last part. I carry 3 (sometimes 4) passengers and the hardest part is merging at the bottom as most people don’t want to let you in, probably because they have spent up to half an hour getting to the bottom and don’t like people like me getting in front of them.
