If you thought you had seen the last of the orange cones and hard hats on “Groan-ewa Rd”, think again.
After Transit’s $33 million upgrade of the Onewa interchange finished in November last year, road works will restart in February and continue until at least October.
North Shore City Council’s roading engineer, Kimdon Nguyen, says the new round of construction is the last stage of the corridor upgrade.
“We are extending the T3 lane through to Lake Rd,” he says.
“We are also putting in a flush median in the centre to help residents turn into their driveways and a ‘share with care’ footpath that will run along the BP side of Onewa Rd.”
All up, the roadworks have cost the council $11.6 million.
“There has been a lot of roadworks on this road but we had to tie things in with what Transit was doing,” says Mr Nguyen.
Already, the footpaths and berms on the north side of lower Onewa Rd are being dug up to install gas pipes.
