Takapuna resident Shaun Quincey departed Australia on January 20 on his solo crossing of the Tasman in a row boat.
This is following in his fathers foot steps. His father Colin did the crossing in 1977. It’s a long way to row by yourself, 2200km’s.
Shaun made some real positive progress eastward yesterday and last night. He is sitting on the edge of two eastward moving eddies that will push him further eastward. As at 8am this morning he was 120 nautical miles from Coff’s Harbour and roughly 100 nautical miles off the nearest coast which happens to be Forster, the spot where the Australian kayakers left from in 2008.
Last night he experienced some pretty big seas but slept well. At one stage he woke up and looked out his window only to sea water, so he was unsure whether he had half rolled or was swamped by a wave. This morning he woke to un-rowable conditions but the boat is still in perfect working order. He will have to spend the day in his cabin with the sea anchor deployed, and is thinking about redecorating, sleeping and maybe watching a movie.
Last night Shaun was quite excited to explain that the boats plumbing passed its first ‘test’ however the swells made things rather tricky!
Keep the support coming, he really appreciates hearing about the facebook posts, emails, blogs and tweets.
His current coordinates as at 2:17pm on 23/01/2010
105′ at 2.2 knots tracking 108° True
32° 00′ 37″ S 154° 53′ 36″ E
