Everywhere we look cyclist are growing in numbers. On the weekend Lance Armstrong twittered and thousands of cyclists showed up for a ride with the champion.
“Whoa!!! Adelaide came out!! Thx to every1 for being there. Estimates were anywhere between 5 and 10 thousand folks. On bikes!!,” Armstrong twittered after the event.
But with deaths in New Zealand and around the world from cycling traffic accidents tragically continuing and causing families untold grief - plans for cycleways around Auckland must be given a priority. And in the interim – education for considerate sharing of the road – must be promoted.
This is not to suggest one side of the debate or another is right – just to acknowledge that the grief between cyclist and motorists is inevitable if we can’t find a middle path or serious solution.
Cycling is here to stay, it is sustainable and economical.
And not everyone who cycles wears lycra! What do you think??
