Overwhelming support from the community for a 24 hour liquor ban in the public areas of Northcote central has led to the North Shore City Council implementing a permanent ban in the area.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas were asked for their feedback on a 24-hour liquor ban for Northcote via a postcard submission mail drop. The results were overwhelmingly in support of the ban, with 285 out of the 287 submitters in favour.
The area affected encompasses the Northcote Shopping Centre with the boundary going along College Road to Cadness Street then along Tonar Street and Lake Road to the Exmouth Road/College Road intersection.
The Council’s Senior Advisor Environmental Protection, Ian Parker, says the liquor ban was originally proposed by the Birkenhead-Northcote Community Board, after concerns were raised about high instances of alcohol related crime in the area.
“The safety and security of our residents is paramount and it is for this reason that the 24 hour liquor ban has been enforced.
“Statistics released by the NZ Police from the period December 2008 to February 2009 indicated that alcohol related offences in the area peak on weekends but there are also significant problems throughout the week, from midday onwards during the day,” says Ian Parker.
The NZ Police and local community groups support the enforcement of the 24 hour liquor ban in the area.
The liquor ban officially came into effect on 15 January 2010.
