Poisonous sea slugs on North Shore beaches – may still be a major problem over the Summer.
Sea slugs containing tetrodotoxin (TTX) poison have been found on some North Shore beaches. While no sightings of slugs have been reported recently, caution on beaches is advised until further notice. The Auckland Regional Public Health Service advises:
- children and pets should be closely supervised
- don’t eat anything washed up on the beach
- parents and caregivers need to be aware of where their children are swimming or playing and what they are handling
- sea slugs MUST be avoided
If you find a sea slug, mark the spot, leave it alone and call Actionline on (09) 486 8600.
