Safe summer campaign launches with new website

safe-summer-surf This year the annual North Shore “Make it a Safe Summer” campaign has launched with a new website and hundreds of giveaway prizes.

Log on to www.safe4summer.co.nz and answer a quick safety quiz to be eligible for a free coffee or ice cream, and to be in the draw for a major prize.

The summer campaign is focused around risk areas such as boating and water safety, road safety, graffiti, alcohol and dogs. Safe behaviour is promoted through beach patrols, banners and posters, surf lifesaving towers, the media and school visits, and via a strong staff and volunteer presence at many summer events on the Shore. There will be beach patrols, dog control officers and Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving lifeguards on most North Shore beaches from December 2009 until 6 February 2010.  Local radio station Big FM 106.2 will broadcast updates and beach reports.

The safe summer campaign began in the summer of 2004, when five people drowned on North Shore beaches.  The North Shore City Council and other organisations joined forces to make a positive difference to safety on the North Shore.

Other agencies include Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving, the ACC, the NZ Police, Watersafe Auckland and Maritime New Zealand. The programme has been grateful for the support of the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council (ALAC), Tip Top, Les Mills Takapuna, Winger North Shore, Wairau Road, Bunnings Warehouse North Shore, and Big FM 106.2.
