This week North Shore City Mayor Andrew Williams and Prime Minister John Key jointly opened the new Aberley Walking and Cycling Bridge in Albany.
The bridge was built by North Shore City Council as part of a ‘TravelWise for Schools’ initiative to make walking and cycling to Albany Junior High School easier for students.
It also functions to connect the fast growing communities of Schnapper Rock Road and The Oaks in this very popular part of our city.
Because of poor weather the official ribbon cutting ceremony was moved indoors, though Mayor Williams, accompanied by a group of students, braved heavy rain to inspect the new bridge up close afterwards.
The new path leading to and from the bridge also features large unique tiles – tiles that were proudly created from designs of students at Albany Junior High School.
These tiles communicate stylised representations of walking and cycling, inline with TravelWise aims, and will undoubtedly provide a proud legacy for many years to come.
‘TravelWise for Schools’ aims to encourage schools, parents and students to work together to make it easier and safer for children to get to and from school by sustainable forms of transport.
The need for the Aberley Bridge was identified through Albany Junior High School’s TravelWise travel plan process.
There are now 45 TravelWise Travel Plans proudly in place on the North Shore
