Mayor Williams believes that central government will have to reach a 26% contribution to the leaky homes disaster if a viable solution is to be found.
In his weekly summary of events with North Shore Community Radio, Mayor Williams reiterated his stance - that central government must match the local government contributions of at least 25%.
“We believe the contributions should be made up of 25% for local and central government and 50% for the home owners.”
“To my mind the central government offer of 10% is appallingly low and doesn’t reflect the returns the government is going to receive in GST and income taxes. It also doesn’t reflect the estimated cost in health costs of residents living in leaky homes estimated to be in the vicinity of $474 million.”
