The six Mayors representing those councils most affected by the leaky homes catastrophe, are meeting today to come up with a response to the central government’s proposed solution to the problem.
Under the proposed plan, owners who drop legal action against their council can settle for approximately 30% of the cost of repairs. The Government would cover 10% of the scheme’s total cost.
However one Auckland homeowner, Colin Johnson of Newmarket, stated that people must be aware of the costs they may face if they do not accept a settlement once it has been finalised.
“If they don’t accept a settlement and they go to court, in most cases they will win – but the councils and other parties will appeal, and that takes another two ro three years to have the matter heard and decided,” he told National Radio today.
Other homewners said that remedial work that may be carried out meant little money would be available for lawyers and that they are in a no win situation.
Wellington Mayor, Kerry Prendergast, said the mayors are absolutely committed to finding a solution to take back to the government.
