A recent speight of accidents involving cyclists has led to a suggestion that they might be being targeted by some motorists.
On October 15 in the Waitakeres, a cyclist had a can of red paint thrown at him while he was cycling along his usual haunt of Scenic Drive.
Tom Blackhall saw a four-wheel-drive vehicle come close to him, but paid no notice of it until someone inside the car opened the window and threw a small can of pain at him.
It bounced off his hand, chest and chin, and could have knocked him off his bike if he hadn’t been going slowly uphill at the time.
And there has also been the suggestion that the ute that hit Dr Ian Graham Robinson has been involved in other incidents with cyclists.
Police fear the driver may be intentionally targeting cyclists. There have been previous reports involving a ute of very similar description.
Councils around the Auckland region are working on awareness campaigns for both motorists and cyclists.
