Welfare numbers on the North Shore jump 33%

By David Tilson

The number of beneficiaries on the North Shore has increased dramatically from a year ago.

Figures just released by the Ministry of Social Development reveal a 57,000 or 21%  increase in beneficiary numbers nationally. On the Shore the increase has been even more dramatic with beneficiary numbers up by 33%

North Shore increases across the various benefits, particularly in unemployment, indicate a similar trend. All beneficiaries on the North Shore have increased from 6787 in September 2008 to 9041 in September 2009.

Unemployment figures alone have increased from 387 in September 2008 to 1909 in September 2009. A leap of nearl 400%

Local National MP Wayne Mapp is currently unavailable for comment as he is overseas. His website “The Mapp Report” quotes  Treasury figures that expect unemployment nationally  to reach only 7.5%, compared to the Budget prediction of 8%.
