A total of more than 12160 people received elective surgery in the last year according to figures released by Health Minister Tony Ryall.
This represents an increase of 860 people over the previous year.
Tony Ryall said that Waitemata, as in other Health boards were struggling to keep pace with the demands of an ageing and growing population.
