The old bridge spanning the Oteha Stream - footpath being replaced
A new bridge, costing $2 million, is currently being constructed in Albany, for the shared use of pedestrians and cyclists.
The location of this bridge is along the Oteha Stream off the Old Albany Highway. This initiative comes as a move to promote children to walk or cycle to school.
The $2 million cost is being shared between the North Shore City Council, the Ministry of Education, and the New Zealand Transport Agency.
Alongside this improvement, rubbish bins are being installed and native trees are being planted.
The path of the current bridge (pictured) is quite narrow, and this initiative is to promote cycling and walking.
This follows a policy by most Councils including North Shore City Council to promote cycling which has already seen a significant investment in infrastructure for cycling. In some cases this has been quite controversial and subject to considerable debate.
If you have an opinion on this subject then leave us a comment and don’t forget to vote in our Lake Road Cycleway poll that currently shows 75% of those polled being opposed to the current cycleway system.
