If you read the comments in the editorials of the papers you are left with the impression that there are not many supporters of cycle lanes on Lake Road.
According to the comments I have seen most people seem fed up with the added delays on Lake Road that add precious time to the daily commute.
Whenever the subject is raised pro cycle lobby group that seems far better organised than those opposing it come out with ways the two can cohabit ate and all problems can be fixed.
I look daily at the long queues stretching at times from one end of Lake Road to the other and can see only two options to fix the problem;
1. Widen the road and put more lanes in or
2. Give everybody a bike and let them start using the the cycle lanes that appear to be wasting space at the moment.
Something has to be done! It seems a crazy predicament at the moment that for the sake of a few, many are being completely inconvenienced. If the so called solutions were so simple, then I’m sure that they would have been attended to well before now.
So what is the solution. Have your say and leave your comments. Should we have cycle ways on key commuter roads and if so what are the solutions that will solve the current grid lock on Lake Road. Or are the cycle lanes not the issue?
We will collate some of the views and have an on air discussion with key interested parties. So here’s your chance lets get the views of North Shore people. Cycleways yes or no?

John, I couldn’t agree more. Lake Road has been hopeless ever since the cycleway started. Clearly it just isn’t an effective use of the limited space available. My view is go back to what we had. The cyclists can find a nice quite road that won’t impede my ability to get from A to B. Peter – Bayswater
Hello John,
For those who think that the cycle lane pose no problem, then they need to try and turn right out of Williamson Ave Belmont durning peak periods because of the lane taken out down at Winscombe Street.
One thing I have noticed is the massive footpath running all the way from Hauraki Corner, down past Takapuna Grammer then all the way along Lake road which also has a cycle lane on it !
I love cycling myself and to Takapuna but this is crazy having two cycle ways right next door to each other !
My answer is to shorten the width of the paths and add one cycle lane then three lanes all the way along Lake Road with 2 Lanes heading out of Devonport upto midday and 2 lanes heading into Devonport after the 4.30 exodus from the Navy base which could be controled by lights.
